Start your first conversation

Overview

From the first question to the first useful answer: this page shows how to begin a conversation, what makes a good first question and how to keep working with the answer. Allow five minutes.

Step by step

1. Open a new chat

Click New chat in the sidebar. You see an empty input field and the note that the AI can make mistakes – it stays there permanently and is not a sign of a problem.

2. Ask the first question

Write your question the way you would put it to a capable but literal-minded colleague: specific, with context and with an indication of what the result should look like.

Instead of: "Help me with the report." Better: "Summarise the following text in five bullet points for the management board: …"

Press Enter or click Send. The rules behind this are under Better prompts.

3. Read the answer – and the train of thought, if you like

The answer appears progressively. With models that support reasoning, you can expand the train of thought above the answer; you do not need to read it for the result. If the answer takes too long or heads in the wrong direction, stop it with the stop button and rephrase.

4. Follow up

You do not have to pack everything into one question. The assistant keeps the conversation in view:

  • "Shorter, please, three sentences."
  • "Phrase that as an e-mail to a customer."
  • "What speaks against it?"

Each follow-up builds on the conversation so far – as long as you stay in the same chat.

5. Add a document

Drag a file into the chat or use the paperclip. Wait for the confirmation that the file was uploaded, then refer to it in your question: "Which deadlines are in the contract?" In the chat, 10 MB per file applies; which formats work is described under Supported file formats.

6. Name the conversation – or start a new chat

Give the conversation a meaningful name in the chat history if you will need it again. When you change topic, start a new chat instead: it begins with an empty context window and gives more focused answers.

What to expect from the first answer

  • It is a suggestion, not a fact. The assistant reproduces what is plausible from its model knowledge or from your documents. Check numbers, names and quotations.
  • It does not know your organisation – except through what you provide, what is in an app's knowledge base or what a connector delivers.
  • It cannot know current events as long as web search is off – and it is off by default.

Notes

Three things that immediately improve answers

  1. Say who the result is for.
  2. Say in what form you need it – table, bullet points, e-mail.
  3. Provide material – the text, the file, the context.

Note

  • Under Personalisation, record how you want to be addressed and in what style answers should be written – then you do not have to repeat it in every conversation.
  • For recurring tasks, an app is worth more than a new chat every time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to address the assistant in a special way? No. Write normally. Politeness is fine but does not change the result.

Can I change a question afterwards? Yes, you can edit a sent message and send it again. See Sending messages.

How long may my question be? As long as necessary. The only limit is the context window – and you rarely reach it with plain text.
