Sending messages
Overview
Everything around the input field: sending a message, line breaks, editing a draft, stopping an answer, resending a message and reusing answers. None of it is complicated – but a few details save time day to day.
Writing and sending a message
Type into the input field at the bottom and press Enter or click Send. For a line break within the message, use your browser's line-break shortcut, usually Shift + Enter.
The input field supports Markdown: start a list with - or 1., and basebox continues the list automatically on a line break. Emoji are no problem either.
Drafts
Text you have started but not yet sent is not lost: switch to another chat and come back, and your draft is back in the input field.
While the assistant is answering
- The answer appears progressively. If you switch browser tabs, the output catches up immediately when you return.
- Above and next to the answer, basebox shows progress notices – for example which connector and which tool are in use and for how long.
- Sending is blocked while files are still uploading. Wait for the confirmation.
- The stop button cancels an answer in progress. The chat stays in a clean state; you can write a new message right away.
Editing and resending a message
You can edit a message you have already sent and send it again – for example to sharpen a phrase or add a detail. The assistant then answers the changed message afresh.
If you merely want to ask the same question again, simply send it again – the result may differ, because language models do not answer deterministically.
Reusing answers
- Copy: select and copy text as anywhere in the browser.
- Code blocks and tables have their own copy and download buttons right on the answer.
- Whole documents: ask the assistant to produce the result as a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file. See Generating documents.
- Voice: instead of typing, you can dictate via the microphone. See Using speech-to-text.
Notes
Note
- One question per message is usually clearer than several at once. Follow-ups cost nothing.
- Every message takes up space in the context window. A new topic belongs in a new chat.
- Attachments appear in a preview above the input field; it does not cover the field even with many files.
What you write is processed
Your message goes to your organisation's language model. It leaves the basebox environment only if you switch on web search or a connector reaches an external system. Whether and how your organisation records conversation content is indicated by the notice in the chat.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Enter send my message when I only wanted a new line? Enter sends. For a line break, use Shift + Enter.
I stopped an answer – can I have it continued? Write "Continue" or ask the question again more precisely. Stopping only discards the part of the answer that was not yet sent.
Can I delete a message? You can delete individual conversations, not individual messages. See Chat history & data.
